Keys and Secret Doors

Part Two

After a long day, the two friends were about to head home; when, something suddenly came to Wybie's mind.
"Oh, I almost forgot." He told her.
"Huh?" Said Coraline.
"C'mon, I've got something to show you." Wybie replied, grabbing her arm.
"Um... Actually, I should probably just see it tomorrow," Coraline replied, pulling back; hesitating. "I mean, it's kinda getting dark right now."
It was true. Though the sun was still out, the sky had begun to get darker.
"But that's why we need to go right now," Wybie replied, getting a bit anxious. "You can only see it at night."
After taking a moment, Coraline sighed.
"Okay, lets go." She replied, giving in to Wybie's pleas; which made Wybie smile with excitement.
On that note, the two friends made their way through the forest; with Wybie leading the way. As Wybie continued to lead Coraline down the winding trail, the sun had already began to set. As the golden sun disappeared over the horizon, it casted a crimson glow against the tinged pink and orange clouds high above and the purple sky was now fading to night. After what seemed like a long walk, the two friends stopped before a high, viny cliff surrounded by tall, wavering grass. Coraline gazed up in awe at the wall of glittering water as it flowed and snaked its way through the many rocks of the cliff side.
"Oh... My..." Was all Coraline could say at the sight that she was given.
Soon, she turned her attention to the scenery around her. As Coraline looked around, she realized the night was clear with many glittering stars. Soon, she spotted the small, golden lights glimmering as they flittered through a few of the nearby green willows and grass near the river. The world that surrounded her, was indescribably beautiful.
"Wybie..." She began, completely speechless.
"This is... Amazing!" She finished finally.
"C'mon," Wybie replied, as he began his way up a trail toward the summit.
Before long, they reached the top. Coraline gazed off into the distance; amazed by the scenery before her. Gazing out in the horizon, one could see the forest stretch beyond the property and toward the distant hills. Everything the moonlight touched seemed to be bathed in a silvery warm glow. High above, the bright evening stars seemed to glisten like gems and diamonds. Coraline she marveled at the amazing sight. As she stood near the edge; gazing out to the horizon, a soft summer breeze gently tossed her hair. Turning, she noticed Wybie stop next to her.
"It's pretty amazing, huh?" He asked her turning to look at her.
"Wybie..." Coraline began, still a bit speechless. "This is more than amazing." She finished after a moment.
Wybie smiled as he nodded in agreement. Soon, he frowned.
"Me and... My parents used to come up here and watch the sunset." He told her finally.
Coraline turned to him frowning, as Wybie sat down. "But when it happened... I've come up here to think."
"Oh Wybie..." Coraline began, as she sat down beside him. "I'm so sorry." She told him, sympathetically placing a hand on his shoulder.
Wybie looked up at her and smiled.
"It's okay," He replied, turning back toward the distance. "I know they're in a better place now." As he said this, a small tear slipped down his face.
Wybie soon felt it, and brushed it away with his hand. Soon. he turned to his friend.
"Well, I think we should go," He started, rising to his feet. "It's getting pretty late."
"Yeah," Coraline replied, getting to her feet as well.
Before long, they made it down the cliff side. They made their way down the forest trail; when, something made them stop. Coraline and Wybie stared at it for a second. Not knowing what it was, they inched closer. Soon, he was close enough to see a black, well sized blotch embedded in the ground. Wybie stooped down and looked at it curiously. Coraline began to do the same; but after a few seconds, it began to move. Wybie and Coraline got up quickly and took a step back as the black shadow rose up out of the ground. It was a creature neither of them had never seen before. The creature was a jet black. It had short stubby arms and legs with long sharp claws. Its eyes gleamed an eerie yellow; which gleamed within the darkness. Long and bent antennas stuck out from the top of its head. Coraline and Wybie took another step back as the creature inched closer. Coraline swatted at it as it reached for her arm. Soon, more of the shadows appeared and arose from the ground around them. Thinking fast, the two friends turned and ran back towards the cliff as the creatures began to attack. Coraline and Wybie came to the cliff; but soon found they were trapped. It was then that something caught Coraline's eye.
"Look! There's a cave!" She told him, pointing towards a large hole behind the glittering falls.
"That's weird," Wybie said. "I've never seen that cave before."
"Who cares!? We have to go now!" Coraline argued.
On that note, Coraline and Wybie rushed into the cavern, hoping to lose the eerie pursuers.
