Keys and Secret Doors




Part Thirteen

One by one, the Heartless attacked. Coraline sliced at them with the strange weapon; making them vanish in clouds of black smoke. Soon, she turned to her friend.
"Wybie, run!" Coraline shouted, slicing at another Heartless that came her way.
"But what about you?" Wybie asked.
"I'll handle them!" Coraline replied as she sliced two more Heartless that tried to attack. "Take cover!"
Though he didn't want to leave his friend to fight the Heartless alone; Wybie took cover nonetheless. Suddenly, more of the Heartless came. As she battled, Coraline began to grow tired; but knew that the Heartless would never quit until they had taken her and Wybie's heart. Coraline continued; striking each creature with all her strength. After what seemed to be an endless battle, Coraline stopped as the last Heartless was struck. Coraline heaved in deep breaths as she rested her weapon in front of her; her head hung low as she tried to catch her breath. The Other Mother scowled at the sight of the girl standing before her. Coraline soon raised her head; her sapphire hair tossed messily about her head and draping slightly over her face as she stared at the Other Mother angrily; still heaving in great amounts of air.
"Hmph!" The Beldam growled. "I see you can't be easily beat."
Coraline's only reply was the heavy breaths she took in.
"But will you have enough strength to save yourself?" At this, the Beldam snapped her fingers and more Heartless appeared and began to surround Coraline.
The Heartless came at her. Coraline slashed at them; causing the creatures of darkness to disintegrate into clouds of black smoke. Wybie could only watch helplessly as his friend's fight grew effortless against the growing threat. Suddenly, Coraline fell to the floor; exhausted from fighting. Her muscles ached from the endless battle. At that moment, Wybie rushed to his friend's aid. The Beldam scowled as she turned her button-eyed gaze toward the young boy.
"You will pay for your meddling, Boy!" She sneered.
With that, the Beldam fanned out her arm before pointing in Wybie's direction. The Heartless seized their attack on Coraline; who was on the floor, and went after Wybie! Wybie stopped dead; staring in horror as an enormous black shadow rose from the ground before him. Without warning, a Heartless leapt onto Wybie's back as one latched onto his right arm and another grabbed onto his left leg. Soon, more of the Heartless came into attack. They all jumped on Wybie, covering him in black as they forced him to the ground. Coraline stared in awe as her best and only friend fought to get free from the creatures of darkness. Just then, there was an unusually bright flash; which filled the room around them! All of the Heartless were all forced into the air; disintegrating into black smoke. As the light faded, there stood Wybie; gripping tightly onto a strange object. Wybie soon turned his gaze up at the Other Mother; who stood where she was; shock and amazement evident in her black button eyes; while Wybie's emerald ones had a look of determination in them.
"Wybie..." Coraline smiled.
Seeing the Beldam in shock, Wybie soon examined his newly required weapon. It was much like Coraline, only it had been crafted differently. The handle was silver and crafted out of what seemed to be metallic piping of a motor-bike. The middle and blade, which was engraved into the handle; much like Coraline's, was crafted into many gears; which were woven with gold and silver. A small white skull hung from the silver chain that connected to the blade's handle.
"Whoa..." Was all Wybie had to say as he gazed at the weapon in awe and shock. Soon, he turned to Coraline; who had gotten her strength again and was making her way over to her friend.
"Wybie... Why did... How..?" She stammered.
"I didn't want them to hurt you again." Wybie replied.
Just then, there was an angry shriek and the two friends turned in awe as the Beldam began to grow taller; her shadow looming over them.
"You pathetic fools!" She bellowed. "I will have my revenge... After destroying you!"
The Beldam let out an evil cackle as the room began to shake, and her shadow began to rise from the floor; its eyes gleaming a hideous, evil yellow. Its hands; transforming into long sharp claws; its body was as black as night. Black smoke began to fill the room as the shadow soon overtook the Beldam's body; causing her to grow taller and more horrific than what Coraline and Wybie had ever thought. The Heartless Beldam cackled evilly as the two best friends readied themselves to fight what now seemed to be their worst nightmare.
